Sound of 1am – 5am

1 am

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

2 am

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

3 am

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

4  am

“Fools” said I, “You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

5 am

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence”

  1. I love this song! What a cool concept, linking it to time like that. That gives it a whole new meaning! As a chronic intermittent insomniac, I know the routine all too well 🌺

Hugs offered if you like them!

    1. Thanks Laina! Can’t really go wrong with this song right? 😉
I was trying to get some sleep but as usual, different (mostly fruitless) thoughts were running through my head but once in a while, I had a light-bulb moment like last night haha💡 What’s even better, the words have already been written for me! 😃 Isn’t it funny how our brain works.
      ❤ 💕

      1. Totally! 😊😊. Funny enough, I had a bout of insomnia that same night lol. Active brain ❤️ Of the song versions, the Disturbed cover is my favorite 💞💞. I actually wrote a post (late July) about my own Asperger’s/autism spectrum discovery as co-opted “lyrics” to that version of the song 😘💓

        Autistic hugs! 🐙🐙

      2. The original is great but I think the Disturbed cover hit many of us on the right spot💘, so epic and emotional! It is my favourite version too 😊
Thanks for dropping by and your comments, I really appreciate it 😘 💕

  3. Another of my favorites. I’m a chronic insomniac so I see the wee hours quite often. Sometimes the quiet is joyous & soothing. Sometimes it’s lonely & painful. It depends on the state of my body & of my mind.
    Great post!

    1. Hi King Ben’s Grandma, thanks so much for dropping by! ❤️ Isn’t it great to have these songs we could listen to for comfort? I tend to think and express myself in lyrics and through songs as I couldn’t find the words to describe my own emotions.
I love the wee hours when I can be the most productive. I do have a very erratic sleep pattern, more of a hypersomniac actually. I take a lot of catnaps 😂

    1. I agree! It’s tough and wasn’t really a fair question, each of them brings out a different emotion. I understand what you mean, I could listen to the Disturbed version on repeat for hours, it’s powerful and cathartic.
